Masjid Gedhe Kauman (The Grand Mosque of Kauman) is the state mosque of the Yogyakarta Sultanate (1755-1945). The mosque was built in 1773 (1699 Alip AJ or 1187 Hijri) by Sultan Hamengkubuwono I (1755-1792) and designed by the palace architect KRT. Wiryakusuma and supervised by Kyai Pengulu KRT. Faqih Ibrahim Dipaningrat.
The pawestren of Masjid Gedhe Kauman was built under the reign of Sultan Hamengkubuwono V (1828-1855) in 1839. The inscription above the main door to the pawestren mentions that the room was intended for women’s Friday prayer.;
