Spanish Mosque in Hyderabad - India
One of the most iconic structures in Hyderabad, the Begumpet Mosque boasts of an impressive facade and awe-inspiring interiors. More than 100 years old, this mosque is known by different names - Mosque of the Moors, Masjid Iqbal Ud Daula, Aiwan-E-Begumpet and Spanish Mosque.
Nawab Sir Iqbal-ud-Daula built this mosque after his return from Spain in the year 1906. This mosque with splendid Hispanic (Moorish) architecture resembles the Cathedral–Mosque of Córdoba (Spain) and Jama Masjid Gulbarga (Karnataka, India).
The use of spires instead of usual domes and minarets gives this mosque a unique church-like appearance. Unlike other mosques, it features a pointed main roof with two curtailed pyramids placed one above the other and separated by octagonal domes.
Capable of accommodating up to 3000 people, this mosque features two rooms, a central corridor and a large prayer hall. Moorish arches and calligraphic Quranic verses inscribed on the walls adorn the interiors of the mosque. Declared as a heritage site by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), this mosque is a place worth visiting.;
