Nueces Mosque — also called the Downtown Mosque or University Mosque — was started by the Muslim Students Association at the university in 1977 and was the first mosque in Austin, the state capital. It serves as a satellite to the much larger Islamic Center of Greater Austin, which was built in 1999 in north Austin and includes an Islamic elementary school. An estimated 8,000 to 10,000 Muslims live in the Austin area, according to the Austin American-Statesman.;
